About Me:
“Even the act of peeling a potato can be a work of art.”
– Joseph de Bueys
– Joseph de Bueys
I'm a writer, writing coach, and instructor working on a book about the potato. It's a personal take on the underdog of the vegetable kingdom. I also make Celtic-inspired jewellery. Both activities reflect my independent nature and particularly the book right now as I'm publishing it myself. More about the book and my jewellery is below.
RECENT NEWS
1. In May, I was interviewed by CBC Radio about my book No Small Potatoes.
2. There's a radio interview with me on the Irish Show, CJAD, and two articles about my potato book. Links for these can be found on my Web site.
Your help in spreading the spud word would be really appreciated. Please let interested friends know. Thank you!
ABOUT THE POTATO BOOK
I travelled to Prince Edward Island, Peru and Hungary to interview people for my book. Peru is the only place on earth that potatoes are indigenous to, and while there, I visited the International Potato Centre in Lima and the Potato Park in Cusco, an eco-tourism venture jointly created and run by the Quechua, native Peruvians who have been the keepers of the potato for centuries. Their park was an inspiring example of alternative economic ventures.

IRISH MUSIC
Also, I play the bodhran in seisiuns (amateur musicians who go to Irish pubs and play Irish traditional music). Five years ago, I saw a film called The Magdelene Sisters. In the opening sequence, during a wedding reception in the basement of a church, a band was playing. The priest was playing a drum. It was such impassioned playing that I just had to find out what exactly that instrument was and learn how to play it. Since then, things have evolved to where I now also make Celtic-inspired jewellery. But because I am essentially a writer, I read up on Celtic goddess mythology and then create jewellery out of that inspiration.
I'll be playing Irish music at the Remember Griffintown event on Saturday, Sep 13. For more info, click here.
So that's me in a nutshell (or a spud seed – yes, Virginia, there ARE potato seeds) – until something else sprouts eyes!
